Managing Scoliosis
Scoliosis is a structural condition characterized by an atypical sideways curvature of the spine. Rather than a simple left-or-right bend, scoliosis often involves a complex rotational component where the vertebrae twist, affecting the ribs, hips, and shoulders. While some cases are present from birth, many develop during adolescent growth spurts or later in life due to asymmetrical wear and tear of the spinal discs.
Because the spine is curved, the body must constantly adapt to maintain a level gaze and a centered gravity. This results in "muscular bracing," where muscles on one side of the curve become chronically shortened and tight, while muscles on the opposite side become overstretched and weak. This mechanical imbalance can lead to persistent mid-back pain, hip unevenness, and reduced lung capacity in more severe cases.
Our approach to scoliosis is focused on stabilizing the curve, Improving mobility, and reducing the physical strain caused by compensation. By combining spinal adjustments, rehab based exercises, and soft tissue therapy, you can hope to stabilize or slow curve progression. Fun fact: Dr. Stupi has scoliosis herself!
